Meet the Owner
My name is Timothy Loney and I am the owner / operator of Elephant Yolk Recording Studio LLC in Ely, MN. At a very young age I remember taking piano lessons and performing in front of an audience. As I entered my teens I recall watching a Led Zeppelin DVD and wanting to be just like John Bonham (we share a birthday). Over the next decade I was fortunate to play in several bands and perform, mostly in the twin cities. One piece of this that is central to my story is have a space to play. My parents (and many of my friend's parents) put up with / tolerated / were blessed with listening to teenagers learn their instruments and attempt to write the best rock n' roll songs. Shout out to the parents. There was a place in particular that has a lasting imprint on my heart.
As a young musician, I was lucky enough to be able to call Ambient Sound (Saint Paul) a 2nd home. My friend Michael's father, Bob, taught me a lot about recording, song writing, and the music business. Having the chance to record and write in such a space was probably taken for granted at the time. Years later it dawned on me how lucky I was to have a place in town where I could freely express myself through music and be surrounded by supportive artists.
Now, I hope to share that same opportunity with my new home. Whether it is song writing or recording I want Elephant Yolk to be a place where artists can feel comfortable to explore their inner voice.

The idea came to me from looking at Rorschach drawings. The logo represents the notion that each individual may see, hear, and experience music differently and should express their uniqueness.
Once you enter the studio you have entered the yolk, where the potential for new birth, and ideas emerge. The liminality of recording allows for the unknown to be experienced.
